CHAPTER 17

LUCINDA

Dylan insisted on sleeping on the floor of my room to keep an eye on me overnight. The only problem with that idea was leaving Felix unattended.

Do I think Felix would leave us? No.

But, would he? If it was in his best interest, he wouldn’t hesitate.

I tiptoe around Dylan and enter the common room. It’s still dark, but the early morning light peaks through the curtains.

Felix is nowhere to be seen.

Damn him! I crack my knuckles and scurry over to Dylan.

“Dylan, wake up.” I nudge him with my foot.

He swats at my leg. “Leave me alone.”

“Get up, damn it. This is important.” I kick him, this time in his kidney.

“Ouch!” Dylan rolls over, presses up on his elbow, and glares at me.

“What’s so important that you had to wake me up at this godforsaken hour?”

I point to the common rom. “Felix is gone.”

“Good. I didn’t like him traveling with us anyway.” Dylan lies back down.

“What are you doing? Come on, get up!” My stomach tightens at the thought of Felix loose in the world, and unsupervised. I should never have trusted him. I will not be making that mistake, again.

Dylan yawns as he stands up and stretches his arms out wide. “You are a pain in the ass in the morning, do you know that?”

I smirk. “Get used to it.”

“I need a shower—”

A growl vibrates up my throat.

“I’ll be quick, I promise,” Dylan says as he walks into the bathroom.

I sit on the couch, pull out my phone, and stare at the screen. What do I say? Anything I say will just set him off again.

Me: Hey. How is he?

Mia: I don’t know.

Me: What do you mean?

Mia: I’m not home.

Me: Where are you?

Mia: Will you be home soon.

Me: Have you heard from him?

Mia: No. You?

Me: No.

Mia: What happened?

Me: He didn’t like what I said.

Mia: Lol. He’ll feel better when you’re home. When are you headed back?

Me: I’m not.

Mia: Shit. Gotta go. TTYL.

I stare at the wallpaper on my phone. I have it set to a picture of Caiden—his silhouette against the evening sky, with part of him in the shadows so he looks like a dark angel. A tear falls on the screen, and I blink away the remaining drops before they fall.

Why would an angelic beast like Caiden ever want a dirty half-breed like me? Sighing, I close the phone and tuck it into my pocket.

As soon as we check out of our room and exit the motel office, my nose twitches. The familiar scent of cloves and bayberry swirls in the air. Felix stands leaning against the brick wall just outside the exit. He jiggles a set of keys in his hand and motions for us to follow him across the parking lot.

I restrain a growl as my lips curl. Jackass.

But when I follow Felix and turn the corner, I stop in my tracks. A striking Aston Martin Rapide is parallel parked next to the curb.

“Nice ride.” Dylan stuffs his hands into his pockets and smirks.

Felix flicks his wrist and waves off the compliment.
