CHAPTER 16

Hunter

The morning was clear and still as the Pack left the campsite. It was as if, after witnessing his brutality the day prior, the forest sought to lurk below his awareness. The Pack too went about their duties, efficient and subdued. No one spoke of Van or what had been done to dispose of the body. Hunt, quite frankly, didn’t give a solitary fuck. They could leave the carcass out for the wolves as far as he was concerned. Van’s things were collected and the horses loaded up, the new pup Heck inheriting the dead Alpha’s mount. Which seemed fitting, given the pup’s role in disrupting the assault and watching over his Omega as she panicked and ran.

As Kess’s clothes were still damp and reeking of male violence, Hunt dressed her in a spare shirt of his own. It hung on her dainty frame and fell off her shoulders. He conspicuously pulled the collar to the side to expose the oozing bite mark and display it for the Pack’s notice.

And notice they did. He watched their eyes alight on the mark and slide away, some with grim confirmation of what they’d already anticipated, some with barely concealed surprise, some with shock at the savagery.

He understood. Whatever human part remained inside him recoiled at the barbarism, yet he couldn’t keep his own eyes off of it. It equal parts thrilled and disturbed him. Occasionally he tended to the wound, kissing and lapping in an attempt to staunch the trickling blood and soothe the torn and reddened flesh. Each drop of Kess’s blood coated his tongue and reminded him of the heated spurt that had shot in his mouth the night before. When his lips detached from the vicious wound with a final, gentle sweep, a bone-deep growl quaked through his chest, and one word echoed in his head: Mine.

She’s mine.

The knowledge sang inside him, filling him with a sensation of such pure, unmitigated rightness, he wanted to cry. Where had this Omega come from? And what had he ever done in his life to deserve her?

Like the rest of the Pack, Kess’s silence spoke volumes. She’d permitted another round of mating this morning, when it became clear to Hunt that going without would not be a viable option, his dick so hard he wondered if it would infarct itself. In the blue-gray morning, she’d submitted to him, soft and languid in his arms, her back against his front, sighing and mewling as her cunt milked his knot for all it was worth. Nose buried in her neck, with the taste of her scent and her blood on his lips, he’d honestly thought his brains might liquify right out of his nose.

She flinched away as he pressed another kiss to her shoulder, and resignation shoved hard between his shoulder blades. Despite her impassioned words last night, she hadn’t wanted this. Drunk on ecstasy, she’d declared she was his, but she hadn’t wanted to belong to an Alpha ever again. He understood that intellectually.
