“You look even worse than yesterday. Are you sure there’s no silver left in that wound?” Rex stands, arms crossed, leaning against the island in Cooper’s kitchen. “Where’d you go anyway? I thought you’d stay in your old room.”

Rex looks hurt by the fact that I didn’t spend the night in the packhouse; I never even made it to dinner. Given Marie knows what’s going on, I’m sure she weaved them a convincing tale, but I should have been here. I know Rex feels that if I had really wanted to, I would have made it back.

More than anything, I wish I could speak to him about this. He’s the only one who has experienced the pain of what I’m going through. Sleeping for almost twenty-four hours hasn’t helped me at all. I still feel like I’ve been hit by a truck, and my wolf is practically feral. His instinct is to go and find her, to hunt her down and claim her by force. He’s not interested in anything other than making sure she’s marked as ours. It’s scary how ruthless he is.

“I’ve never been shot before. Let me milk it a little,” I joke, plastering a smile onto my face that I really don’t feel. It’s so forced, that ordinarily everyone would be able to see right through it; but they’re all so distracted by their own problems right now.

“Lucia called to check on you. How’s that going?” Rex doesn’t sound impressed, or all that interested. Not wanting to lie, I shrug and frown, mirroring Rex’s stance with my arms crossed.

“It’s complicated. She’s complicated.” I tug down my sleeve, making sure the score marks from Belle are covered. Complicated doesn’t even begin to describe this.

Rex huffs out a laugh and smiles. “Aren’t they all?” He’s completely enamoured with the enigma that is Leah Walker. He thinks I understand, but my feelings for Lucia are nowhere near the same. Belle, on the other hand… the woman rejected me, and I can’t think of anything other than making her realise what a mistake that was.

“I’m afraid they’ll come for Hayley and the baby. It has to be a ransom they’re after,” I whisper, not wanting to disturb a sleeping Hayley with concerns like this.

Cooper appears in the doorway, as if he knew the turn this conversation was about to take. He heads straight to the coffee machine and turns it on, looking like he needs to crawl back into bed beside his mate.

“Toby wasted their money on fancy cars and renovating the packhouse, thinking the hotel sale was a done deal. Now they don’t have enough money to complete the work, but they need the hotel up and running to turn it back into a profitable business.”

Rex and Cooper wince. It’s a tough situation for the pack. It’s not their fault Toby mismanaged the funds so badly.

“A lot of the pack still blame us and want to make us pay for it. Alpha Anderson is incapacitated, to be blunt, he doesn’t look like he’s going to make it much longer.
