I am no stranger to impossible situations. There are times I feel almost like a hero of old who must somehow discover a way to fix the unfixable. There are times I believe my lot in life is to be a larger-than-life character in an epic tale, the character who faces impossible odds but somehow manages to overcome them. There are times I feel like a creation, a fictional construct for a blockbuster movie that will bring all of those in the film to the point where there is no hope before an exciting, explosive climax suddenly turns the tide.

But this is no quest.

This is no hero’s journey.

This is no series of transformative obstacles that will somehow lead to success in overcoming adversity and changing the course of history so that everything works out to be joyous without tragedy.

And now, I risk everything.

We stand outside of my house and, of course, many of my subjects come to greet me. Catherine is beautiful and, perhaps more to the point, somehow able to interact with my people in a natural and beautiful way. They take to her, and I suspect the sweetness in the interactions goes beyond the fact that she is my guest. I suspect that they feel tender toward her.

In front of me stands the little girl I hugged on our first day here. Her name is Samantha, and Catherine kneels in front of her in order to be at eye level with her. “Samantha,” I say, “I would like you to do a favor for me.”

She backs up with a bright smile. “Oh course, my liege,” she says with a cute curtsey. Her parents look on proudly.

I say, “Catherine, please know that nobody here will harm you.”

“Harm me?” she asks with a laugh. “Why would you say that?”

“Samantha,” I say, “Shift for me.”

“Yes, Alpha,” she says.

I ought to have considered my words. As Samantha begins to strip out of her clothes, Catherine takes a step back and glares at me. “This is not what it appears,” I say quickly.

“What the hell is… how can you…”

“Please, Catherine,” I say, “all will make sense in just a moment if you—”

“I don’t want to make sense of…” I’m not looking at Samantha but at Catherine but I know when she shifts because Catherine’s eyes grow wide and all anger and mistrust disappears from her face. Her mouth opens in an O and she stares in shock.

I turn and say, “All of you. Shift.”

There are a few who verbally indicate their obedience but for the most part, they realize the importance of speed and soon we are surrounded by naked people and people in various states of undress. They each shift moments after becoming naked. So slowly we’re becoming surrounded by tigers. I study her face as she looks from one to the next.

There is no fear in her eyes.

That may be the most shocking thing imaginable.

Not everyone has shifted before she kneels in front of Samantha again. She reaches forward and gently caresses her head.
