The carriage stopped in front of the large three-storey townhouse. It was five o’clock on a Friday and he prayed he would still find Oliver at home. He turned to Ms Poole.

“I’ll be right back.”

The butler recognized him and quickly informed him that Mr Potts was home and getting ready to go out for the evening. At his request, the man left him in the drawing-room to go call his master. The man had barely left, when Jeremiah heard hasty footsteps coming down the stairs.

Oliver was dressed in a dark suit and his hair was styled to perfection. He came to hug Jeremiah, surprising him. He pulled away to look at Jeremiah.

“How did it go?”

“Well, uh, that’s actually why I’m here.” He grimaced. “I hate doing this so unexpectedly, but I need a place to stay for two nights.”

Oliver smiled broadly. “You don’t even have to ask. You can have the whole second floor all to yourself.” He pulled at this neatly fastened tie, loosening it.

“What are you doing? Your man said you were going out.”

“Not anymore.”

Jeremiah squeezed his friend’s shoulder. “Thank you, Oli.”

“Nothing to thank me for, Jeremiah,” He threw over his shoulder as he poured them both a drink. “Brandy?”

“Yes, but there’s something else I need to tell you first.”

“What is it?”

“I brought the babies with me and they’re waiting outside in the carriage.”

“What? You brought the ba…babies? Are you talking about more than one?” He threw his hands up. “And you left them in the carriage all by themselves?” He slammed the glasses down on the nearest table. “Let’s go get them.”

Completely taken aback by his friend’s reaction, Jeremiah followed him out of the drawing-room. Ms Poole looked surprised when she saw Oliver.

“Oliver, meet Ms Catherine Poole. She was gracious enough to offer to travel with me and the babies.”

Oliver gave the woman a warm smile. “It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Ms Poole. Thank you for coming to my friend’s aid. “My name is…”

“Mr Oliver Potts. I’ve seen some of your work. It’s an honour to meet you, sir.”

“That’s very kind of you, Ms Poole.” He turned to Oliver. “I could get one of my servants to stay the night and serve as a chaperone.”

“That’s not necessary, Oliver. I’m booking Ms Poole into Mivart’s for the next two nights.” He noticed Ms Poole’s surprised face. He wasn’t sure if it was the fact that he was booking her into the most expensive hotel or that he had taken it upon himself to add one more night to her layover in London. He gave her a small smile and she blushed. “Now, if you don’t mind, could we ask one of your female servants to see to the infants while I accompany Ms Poole to the Mivart’s Hotel?”

“Not at all, as long as I can come along.” He directed the question at the young woman and she blushed prettily at the acknowledgement.

“You are welcome, Mr Potts.

“Thank you, Ms Poole.”
