Selected Chinese Humor Collections, 1900–1937

This incomplete list includes collections of jokes, essays, verse, anecdotes, and stories, as well as mixed-genre collections. It does not include any dedicated collections of humorous songs, plays, comics, or cartoons. The main selection criterion was whether or not the work is explicitly advertised in its title, subtitle, front matter, or other paratexts as being funny—not whether it actually is funny. Books are listed by earliest edition I have examined personally or found listed in reliable reference sources, such as Beijing tushuguan, ed., Minguo shiqi zong shumu (Comprehensive Bibliography of Books Published during the Republican Era, 1911–49). Other known editions are listed in the notes. Unknown items I have left blank.
