The sun had fallen behind the trees, and the night was growing cold as Roman walked through the rebel camp, firewood piled high in his arms. Natalia, Aurum, Napoleon, and the twins were all back at their encirclement of tents, eating and enjoying each other’s company. Fraiser had made herself scarce since training earlier that day, which worried him, but Fraiser always worried him. It had been that way since they first met. She was brutally honest and unpredictable, yet reliable. She didn’t like to open up and closed herself off as much as she could.

He needed to check on her and make sure she was all right. She was his closest friend, and he felt like he’d been abandoning her for weeks. He hadn’t meant to. He’d just gotten too caught up in planning and training. But the clock was ticking. They had about a week left until the testings, and he needed to make sure she was ready. The others seemed to be. In fact, after today, the whole camp appeared prepared. The rebels had been training and gathering supplies for the past few weeks, and for once in his life, Roman wasn’t scared to face his father and his army. He was confident in his people.

Lost in thought, he trudged straight through the river separating the main camp from their encirclement of tents. He cursed himself with a small laugh and walked through the tents to the fire and those gathered around it. The twins were laughing at some shared memory, while Napoleon, Aurum, and Natalia argued over which elemental weapon was the best. Roman’s eyes locked with Natalia’s as he passed them and set the wood down near the fire. She flashed him a quick smile.

“Hey, boss man,” Napoleon said with a grin. “I need you to help me out here.”

Roman chuckled. “What is it?”

“Please tell Napoleon and Natalia that they’re wrong, and whips and swords are the best elemental weapons.” Aurum shrugged.

“Okay, whips aren’t terrible, but—” Natalia began only for Aurum to chuck a grape at her head.

“Nope! I’m right, and you two are wrong,” she said.

Napoleon rolled his eyes. “Whatever, Aurum.”

“Come sit with us,” Natalia offered with another smile.

He returned the smile but remained standing. “I would, but I need to go find Fraiser. I’ll see you guys in a little bit.”

“Later, boss man!” Napoleon called as Roman turned toward the darkening forest.

He knew where Fraiser would be. She always went to the tallest tree at the top of the highest hill surrounding their camp. He trudged through the forest heavily. His feet were tired, and so was his mind. All the training and preparing were beginning to take a toll on him. Now what they needed was rest in order to be ready for the testings. Roman’s calves began to burn halfway up the hill. He used the trees around him to pull himself further. He reached the top and sat down, leaning his back against the trunk of a tree.

“I could hear you coming from a mile away,” Fraiser called down from among the branches.
