Confession (Will)

I was beginning to wonder where she had gone. I knew my Scarlett wasn’t one to enjoy awkward conversations. Neither was I for that matter. I knew that she was anxious about going down to speak with Melissa, knowing that the big wife-sharing secret had been revealed to us, and we were now, all, in-the-know.

And yet when I wandered out to the balcony to check on them I had seen them wandering off towards the beach, arm-in-arm, seeming as happy as could be, as if nothing were weird or awkward in any way.

But, Melissa wasn’t the kind of woman who did ‘awkward’, as a rule. If anyone was going to laugh the whole thing off or own the situation completely, it was her. So I wasn’t that worried when I saw them headed out towards the beach together.

Ah, let them go and blow off some steam, I thought. They’ve probably got a lot to talk about. If we are going to stay in contact with Ethan and Melissa this time around and be friends in the future, then it’s probably best if there aren’t any major secrets between us.

And then, from deep down, that sordid, kinky part of my mind chimed in. And wouldn’t it be good for Scarlett to hear all about Melissa and Ethan’s hotwife lifestyle? Isn’t that exactly the kind of thing you have been longing to try? How God-damned hot would it be, if Scarlett listened to all Melissa’s stories and started to get ideas of her own? Ideas about being a shared wife, perhaps!

I fought to tamp down my absurd fantasies. And before too long, regular worries seemed to crowd them out anyway. Where are they? Seems like they’ve been gone a long time for just a regular stroll down the beach?

And just as I was beginning to wonder whether I should head out to search for them, the door to our rooms burst open. Scarlett came flying in, collapsing onto the bed in a heap of tears.

“Woah! Babe! What’s wrong?”

I rushed to her side, laying on the bed beside her, stroking her hair as the emotions poured out of her. She was too distraught to speak, and for a good while, I just let her cry. Whilst all the while, growing as the seconds passed by, a knot of questions and dark thoughts gnawed at my mind: What the hell happened down out there? What could have upset her like this? And if it was a ‘whom’, rather than ‘what’, that had caused this, then would I be able to control my anger?

When her tears finally seemed to subside a little, I coaxed her gently to roll on her side and face me.

“Scarlett . . . It’s okay. Just tell me what happened?”

We were facing each other, but she stared down at the sheets that lay between us, seemingly unwilling to meet my eyes.

“Did you and Melissa have a falling out?” I probed, desperate to get her talking.

She raised a hand to wipe the tears from one cheek and gave a disconsolate sniffle.
