CHAPTER FORTY

Phil’s plan to disconnect from the snorkel before they pulled it down worked like a charm. He awoke immediately when the engine stopped running, the line still wrapped around his hand. He gave it a single hard jerk, and began floating back behind the sub while the snorkel disappeared beneath the waves.

It was 4:30 AM. He verified that the raft was riding well in its new position, then snuggled back under the shroud, pulled his cap down, and drifted back to sleep.

Several hours later Phil was greeted by the sun and the usual seabirds cawing overhead and dipping down to see if he was edible. He glanced to one side and felt a small thrill when he saw the dolphins were back. He didn’t know why, but he always felt better when they were with him. He wondered if they were the same ones that had escorted him yesterday morning. When he got back home, heʼd look up dolphin ranges on the Internet and find out if they might be.

Suddenly the net seemed to be jerking beneath the raft. Fresh fish! He reeled the net in carefully and found a beautiful sea bass struggling to get loose. “Sorry, Mr. Bass. Today you’re breakfast.” Minutes later, after sea bass sushi and a swig of water, Phil pulled up his cell phone to check the position app.

Wow—they were almost off the coast of Georgia. But something didn’t feel right. Something had changed. He couldn’t put his finger on it at first, until he realized he was—cold! The sun felt warm; he put a hand in the water—definitely colder.

Glancing at his watch, it seemed like the sun was in the wrong place. It should have been off his left knee, not his hip. The sub must have changed course. He opened a compass app and saw they were going 35 degrees northeast—not the usual straight north. What were they up to?

Watching the dolphins jump and dive, Phil thought it over. “I know what youʼre doing,” he said. “You’re cutting the corner.”

North of Florida, the U.S. coast curved to the east. Rather than follow the curvy coast and stay parallel, the sub was shortening the trip by heading to the hump of Cape Hatteras.

But theyʼd pulled away from the Gulfstream. Phil had gotten so used to the Gulfstream that he never considered it wasn’t ubiquitous, at least for this ride. He hoped theyʼd meet up with it again when they got to Hatteras, because it was gonna be very nippy in the meantime. And if the good weather didnʼt hold, he could be in serious trouble. Lord, keep me warm!
