After retrieving her gym bag, Lola headed towards the Main Hall with the others for the afternoon classes. As she arrived, Professor Thunderbolt was already waiting to lead his group to the west wing. To their delight, Devlin and Lola got to join their friends for Magic class. The Magic classroom was similar to the one for Traveling; it had a proper classroom on one side and a practice room on the other side of the glass partition. The teacher asked Lola and Devlin to sit with more experienced students and to take notes. They would only be auditing in the next few classes. He gave them each a textbook to read—The Rules of Magic, A Handbook for Non-Magical Beings.

Lola sat with Sara and soon understood why they would only be observing. Until either of them mastered rudimentary Latin, it was pointless trying to read, let alone speak, any spells.

Professor Thunderbolt had a very large book on his desk that looked a lot like the Archives Lola had received and brought along in her chest. She figured teachers would request that she produce it when it was required, though none had done so. She leaned into Sara and asked her about the book.

“That’s the Archives. A rare and valuable book of spells dating back to the beginning of Travelers. It was said to have been gifted to humans, with the keys, by the Ancestors, though I don’t know who they are or where they came from,” whispered Sara as the teacher was demonstrating the proper way to enunciate a specific spell for going ten seconds back in time.

Lola let that sink in. So it was a good thing she had left her copy of the Archives in her chest. She wondered if she should tell the Headmaster she had it with her. It was hard not to feel like she was in some kind of trouble. At the very least, someone in her family tree must have done something wrong down the line for them to be so different from all the other Travelers. Well, there was Devlin too. And probably those other Travelers on the council, but there was no way to tell. Maybe they had all attended the Academy. But why have a council with only a dozen or so families from all over the world? There was a dozen or so kids in each group of the summer program at the Academy. That meant there had to be at least fifty families of Travelers. Was this the only school? she wondered.

She needed to drop this and pay attention. Professor Thunderbolt ran through a handful of spells and then asked the students to go practice in pairs in the other room. When Lola and Devlin made to follow them, he kept them back, keeping an eye on the other students.

“There are only two afternoon classes at a time, so you won’t be getting any private classes the way you do in the morning. I hear Lady Samsara saw you privately yesterday, but that’s only because she has an intern this summer.
