Formal education will make you a living;
self-education will make you a fortune.

SEVEN
BE A GOAL MAGNET
In chapter six we talked about how everything you need to achieve success already exists in the universe. In this chapter, we will further explore the laws we live by. Why am I spending so much time on these laws? Because we don’t have a choice as to whether or not we live by them. They are one of the few things in life we can’t choose. However, the good news is that we can use these laws, these forces, to our personal advantage. We just need to tap in to them, and that is exactly what your PPM will do for you.
We also talked about how harnessing the power of the universal laws enables us to utilize them to create the things we desire in our lives. We’re going to take this a step further and talk about using those laws to become a “goal magnet.” You will literally be able draw your goals toward you. You will write them down with a specific message to yourself in order to make them real and give yourself something tangible to focus on.
The Harvard Business School ran a study on the financial status of its students ten years after they had graduated. The results, as discussed in Michael Masterson’s 2010 book The Pledge, may surprise you: 27 percent of the prestigious institution’s former students needed financial assistance, 60 percent were living paycheck to paycheck, 10 percent were living comfortably, and only 3 percent were financially independent.15 Furthermore, and here’s where the findings get very interesting, they found the 27 percent who required financial assistance had no goal-setting process in their lives. The 60 percent who were living paycheck to paycheck only had basic survival goals like how to manage their bank accounts or paychecks. The 10 percent who were living comfortably knew where they were going, and they had plans or pictures of where they wanted to be five years from that time. Most striking, however, were the people who were financially independent: that 3 percent had written down goals and the steps required to reach them.
The results of that study show that in order to achieve your goals, it’s not only necessary to have those goals set clearly in your mind, but also have in place the action steps that are needed to reach them. This confirms what we’ve discussed up to this point. Early on in my real estate days, I used a day planner as my time planner and found it to be very effective tool for me. You can find some very good insights on time management on the website daytimer.com.

This isn’t just a book on goal setting. I am showing you exactly what I did to reach my own goals and how you can do exactly the same. Understand that when you’re writing your goals out, the words you use are also highly relevant. You want to write in a specific way so that the ideas will transpose themselves from your conscious to your subconscious mind.
