On the street, Bobby handed a twenty to Dan, who was tongue-tied with gratitude. He put an arm around the kid and swore him to secrecy—A location as good as this, see, is golden. We don’t want Paramount or Fox to get wind of what we’re up to, right?

“Right!” Dan said, beaming.

My first surveillance in Manhattan, and a good day’s work: we got made, but it didn’t matter. Nobody died, nobody got shot. The scales were tipped back, at least a little: a few of the many who owed paid, and would soon pay more.

Later I was elected to drive us home. Before taking off, we bought a six-pack of tall Buds at a Smilers.

Is there any greater genius, I wondered, than the look and feel of New York on a fall night? The lights wrinkling across the Hudson like a sheet of cellophane. Looking in the rearview mirror, the city from the West Side Highway had the black-and-white sheen of a fifties movie, or a grand piano. I kept looking back at the island’s black enamel body, its bone-white keys, polished to a rich gleaming.
