I don’t remember much of my history. I have no memories of my childhood or my early adult life. One of the first things I do remember is waking up confused and in pain—struggling in a dark surgery room—and being told it would be alright. Because Maunhouser would take care of me.

They didn’t.

I’d volunteered, they said, to become one of their elite soldiers through technological enhancements. They completely replaced my left arm, right leg, and left eye, as well as adding at least three neural implants, a transcranial interface, and an untold number of thoracic implants.

They said the memory loss was an unforeseen consequence of the latest neural implant they were testing, but as my time in the program continued, I began to wonder if it had been engineered—I even began to wonder if I had volunteered at all.

Each time they replaced a limb or added a new implant, I’d undergo new rounds of testing. Sometimes they would modify the tech they’d added, tweaking functionality and fit or recalibrating the neural connections. Other times they’d just scrap what they had installed—sending me back into surgery to remove the tech and install an alternate version, which would then undergo its own rounds of testing.

And every time there was the pain and recovery, the slow rehabilitation, and a seemingly perpetual adjustment phase.

At some point, it became clear I was never going become an elite soldier. I was just an advanced test platform for a new generation of tech. To most of the scientists working on me, I was little more than the wet integration of their hardware.

Once I realized the testing and surgeries were the entirety of my program, I decided it was time I left. So, I used what they gave me and forced an escape, during which I stole the Essta.

But Maunhouser wants it back—they want me back. They’ve been after me for nearly ten revolutions.
