According to Henriette Andry Cambre, a descendant of Manuel Andry, Gilbert’s wife and children fled into the swamp and the rebel slaves let them go without incident, only attacking the men. After the rebels left, the slaves who did not join the uprising helped the family back from the swamp, “shaking and soaking wet in their night clothes.” Manuel, his wife Marianne, and their grandchildren all escaped the house together.[23]

Meanwhile, after attacking Andry and his son, the rebels broke into the stores in the mansion’s basement, stealing muskets, ammunition, and militia uniforms that Andry had stockpiled there in case of domestic insurrection. Contemporary accounts reported that between 25-50% of the slaves carried guns out of the house.[24] Many of them had learned to use muskets in the military in Africa, but those who didn’t remained armed with cane knives and axes, weapons they had become experts at wielding in the fields.
