Remember, toxins can—and do—drain your energy. The body needs to devote a lot of resources to ridding itself of foreign invaders, and the diversion of those valuable resources can have a profound effect on your energy. Although building detoxification into your regular routine as part of an energy-saving regime is a great idea (see the rest of this section for ideas), preventing as many energy-draining toxins from contaminating your environment in the first place is even wiser.
THE GREEN REVOLUTION
There are many safe cleaning products on the market. Buy them. Look for products certified by Greenguard Environmental Institute (www.greenguard.org) or Green Seal (www.greenseal.org/findaproduct).
Read product labels (unfortunately, many of the products don’t list their ingredients). But if there are warnings about usage (such as “eye irritant,” “if swallowed, do not induce vomiting; call a physician,” or “handle in a well-ventilated area”), then you can bet the ingredients are toxic. Do look for products that are petroleum-free, chlorine-free, ammonia-free, phosphate-free, alcohol-free, synthetic perfume– and dye-free, and fully biodegradable.
OUST THE ANTIBACTERIALS
And while you’re at it, avoid antibacterial products. More and more soaps and cleaning products are antibacterial, which can be problematic for the following reasons:
1. These products kill good bacteria along with bad bacteria.
2. Many of them can irritate your skin.
3. Their use may help promote super-germs that are resistant to antibiotics.
4. Introducing antibacterial agents into the environment can upset the balance of good bacteria.
5. Most important, by eliminating any challenge to our own immune systems, we’re making it a less powerful defender against all the things that can sap our energy. A little dirt can actually be a good thing, sometimes.
