Macy’s continues to ride a combination of economic recovery and a series of internal operational improvements to find a successful new growth trajectory in a business that many had given up on. Same-store sales ticked upward about 1.4 percent, which combined with the aforementioned store closures to produce an 0.8 percent increase in sales. Better news was found in operating margins, which ticked up from 13.6 percent to a ten-year high of 14.0 percent, in part reflecting operational improvements. That led to an earnings gain of 3.4 percent; a substantial 6 percent share buyback drove per-share earnings forward 10 percent. The story will be much the same through FY2016, with 7–10 percent annual per-share earnings increases on the back of relatively modest 1–2 percent sales gains.
