Mercado Morelos Building

Inside the market building are the permanent food source vendors, and here you can appreciate the dramatic displays of fresh pan (bread) in their many manifestations. This is a great place for foodie pictures. Then be sure to go down into the main comedor (dining hall) one level beyond and look for Café de Frida with the remarkable Frida lookalike owner Beatriz Vázquez Gómez, who’ll pose in photos if you ask nicely. A wonderful place to have breakfast, lunch, or to rest with a hot chocolate and the rich local pan de llermo (egg yolk bread). Sit and rest and watch the lovely Zapotec ladies parade by.

PERIPHERAL ATTRACTIONS

Rudolfo Morales Home

When you’ve finished at the market, you can walk north down the main street (Highway 175), about one block on the left, to the home of Rudolfo Morales. A trip that’s well worth the visit. This extremely large, traditional Mexican home sits in the center of a lush courtyard with beautiful gardens. The home overflows with fine Mexican folk art. Be sure to take a peek into his kitchen decorated with many miniature cups lining the bright walls. The home is now run by the Rudolfo Morales Foundation and is primarily used as an art education center for the town’s youth.
