Chapter Fourteen

Jaclyn had only been gone for five days. Five seemingly endless days. They weren’t going to see each other this weekend. Both of them had too much to do. Marshall damn sure intended to see her the weekend after this. He’d offer to go to her. She needed to know he was serious about sharing the traveling.

Then the day before he planned to leave, everyone—except him—came down with the vomit virus. No one was sure where it had come from but it ran through everyone on the ranch like wildfire. Why Marshall was spared, he didn’t know. Not only did Damaris, Ruthie, Gabe and Chantel, and Chase and Ella get it but damn near every hand came down with it too. Not at exactly the same time but close enough that they were all either sick or recovering. The only other person who didn’t get it was Stewart, the teenager who mucked out the stalls and did other odd jobs. But as he was still in high school he could only help out before and after school. Not that Marshall didn’t appreciate what he did. He just wished there was someone else to share all the other duties with.

He called Jaclyn the first chance he got to break the news. “I can’t come see you this weekend,” he said when she answered.

“Oh, why not? I was looking forward to seeing you. I miss you.”

“I was too and I’ve missed you too, but it can’t be helped. Everyone at the ranch has the vomit virus.”

“Everyone?”

“Everyone,” he repeated grimly. “Except me and Stewart.”

“That sounds awful, Marshall. What happens if you get it too?”

He laughed without much humor. “I can’t. There’s no one else to take care of the horses, not to mention all the other crap involved with running the ranch.” He squeezed the bridge of his nose. “I’m just hoping I can keep from drowning before someone gets well enough to help me.”

“I could come to you. I don’t know a lot but I can take direction well.”

“Absolutely not. I don’t want you getting sick too. I’ll be all right. It’s just going to be a rough few days.”

“I hate for you to have to deal with this all on your own.”

“Don’t worry about it. I’ll survive.”

“If you’re sure…”

“I’m sure but it means a lot that you offered. I have to go now. I’ll try to call tomorrow but I might not be able to.”

“That’s all right. Don’t worry about me. I’ll hear from you when I hear from you. Stay well.”

“Thanks. Jaclyn?”

“Yes?”

“I miss you.”

“I miss you too. Take care.”

He hung up, closed his eyes for a moment, then squared his shoulders and went back to work.

Jaclyn was shocked by how disappointed she was that Marshall couldn’t come see her. She’d been counting on it a lot more than she realized. She tried to get back to work but concentrating was all but impossible.

Rachel walked into her office a short time after that. “What’s wrong? You look like your cat died.
