Chapter Eight

When the phone vibrated under her hand, Anna was surprised to realize she’d actually fallen asleep. She answered quickly, aware of King’s arm around her. No wonder she’d been relaxed. He’d given her a feeling of safety when he held her close.

“You’re good to go, sis. No sign of anyone watching the house now, though there was someone earlier.” Chance sounded excited. He really got off to the chase and obviously thought he was going to spring his trap on Isaac Crane wherever he had set it. “We’ve fooled them, kid. Put Sanders on the phone.”

Anna passed it over, then climbed out of bed. She knew Chance was repeating the same instructions he’d told them earlier. She was glad he was so thorough but right now she just wanted to get this trip over with and finish her program. The house was chilly. Apparently the thermostat had been lowered as if King really was leaving town. She walked into Karen’s bedroom and decided to pick out a warm coat. The temperature outside must have really dropped for it to be cool in here and Chance had mentioned a possible ice storm toward Dallas. Real winter in Texas. King had called it a blue norther. Who knew?

A beautiful red, tan, and black plaid wool coat with a fur-lined hood would match her sweater. If she was going to a billionaire’s cabin, she wanted to fit in, though King had never commented on her lack of style. Of course, he’d known her for about five minutes. The only time they’d been seen in public together had been at lunch, the day they’d met. The restaurant had been casual. Good thing, since she’d been a strange sight in that too-snug pea-green tee eating with a man in a very expensive suit. At least he’d taken off the jacket and tie.

Why was she worrying about what to wear when people were trying to kidnap her? She had to get her priorities straight. Warm gloves were stacked on one of the shelves. If she doubled up on socks, she could fit into some beautiful black leather boots. Better. By the time she got back to King’s side, she was so warm she was almost sweating.

“You look good.” He shrugged into his own suede coat and added a wide-brimmed cowboy hat. All black.

Definitely better for sneaking out of the house and, boy, did he look good. The ranch look suited him just as much as his expensive suit did. But now she wondered whether her red was too bright. She said as much.

“Delaney assures me no one is watching the house. No one from Crane’s side anyway. But why don’t you throw a dark blanket around you so you’ll blend in with the shadows? I’m sure your brother thinks he’s got us covered, but it won’t hurt to be cautious.” He stuck gloves in his pocket.

“You’re right. Your sister has a black coat—” Anna shut up when he touched her chin.

“Don’t change.” He kissed her lips.
