CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

RYDER

“Call my mother if you ever need anything, okay?” I said, sitting outside Maeghan’s house in my truck.

“I will, thank you.” Maeghan nodded, hopping on out of my truck.

After the kiss I would never forget for the rest of my life—mostly because I’m surprised she said yes—I told Maeghan to rest on the couch while I did things around my place.

Thankfully, she stayed right on the couch and gazed out of the window of my view of the lake. I really struck gold when I was able to build the house of my…our, dreams, on this spot. Deep within my mind when I made purchase on this land and secured it in my name, Maeghan was right alongside me in thought. Everything about this place, every decision, I had made them thinking of her.

Deep down, it’s like she never even went away.

When she’d rested for long enough, which was most of the morning, Maeghan had asked I bring her home. If it wasn’t too much trouble. I wanted to immediately jump in and tell her that nothing was, but I held my tongue. One day at a time was how I was going to do this, and that means not blurting out what was on the tip of my tongue.

Not easy, I can tell you. But necessary, nonetheless.

I waited until she went up her drive and into her house until I pulled away. Finally letting out the breath that I didn’t know I was holding in. Part of me hoped she would say something to prolong our time in my truck, just so I had even a few more moments with her. The other half of me—the more rational side—won out yet again. Knowing it was best to drive on away.

There would be a time when we were meant to spend more time together, but now wasn’t it.

Speaking with my father earlier this morning, he said Maeghan didn’t need to come in today and that if I decided to accept, I could also have the day off and come back tomorrow. Things at the ranch would be handled by Holt and the hands, so if I wanted to take the day to do whatever, I could.

I accepted.

Flicking on my turn signal, I checked my rear mirror before making a u-turn and heading on back down the road the way I’d come. There was only one place I could see myself being today, and that place held the sweetest little bundle of joy, otherwise known as Jenna. My niece.

Although we all had spent a lot of time at the hospital, it was mostly spent in the waiting room. We’d all gone in to see Jenna in turn for a few minutes each, holding her and speaking our own blessings for a long and healthy life. My breath had stalled in my throat the moment my brother set Jenna into my arms.

Never in my life, not even when the smallest, cutest calf, filly or colt had been born, have I ever seen anything more precious than my niece.
