He was lost in thought for some moments. "This is drastic, Innes, but it may do the trick. Give him a solemn, final warning. In the presence of every man, woman, and child in this train. Make it clear to him— and everyone else—that the very next time he breaks any rules or fails to fulfiU his obUgations to the rest of us, he'U be expelled from the wagon traia."

Innes MacGregor was startled, but the thought appealed to him. "Ye be right when ye say that would be drastic. What would a man do if he was expelled?"

Lee shrugged. "He might fall ia with bandits or be killed by them. He might go on alone to Austin, assuming he could make the rest of the journey by himself. Or he might die of starvation on the way. Countless fates await such a man, all of them unpleasant. Make all of that plain to Asa Phipps tomorrow, and there's at least a possibility he may behave until we disband."
