Chapter Ten

Gresh put his arm around Jump, hoping like hell his instinct to trust his little brother had been right. He didn't want to regret his decision. Really, he didn't know Jump at all, but something told him Jump wouldn't screw this up for some petty theft. They'd gone into town, opening a checking and savings account for Jump, depositing fifteen thousand dollars between the two accounts.

Jump had argued for hours, telling him to keep his money, but Gresh forced the issue, letting Jump know he didn't have to spend the money. Jump said he felt good just having a job and he kept saying he didn't need much. They were at an impasse until Lane stepped in and helped Jump understand Gresh wasn't trying to pay him off or get rid of him, that he wanted his brother to have some advantages that he should have had his entire life.

Talking to their father was another matter they'd stalled out on. Suddenly, Jump didn't want to let anyone know. At some point in their conversations, Jump revealed that he'd come here to make Gresh pay, but he'd given up on his plans for revenge, just happy to have Gresh in his life.

Gresh knew Hamilton would require a background check, searching out any dirt he could find on the kid. Gresh didn't like it one bit, but knew that's the way it would be.

"Ha," Sheriff Brody called as he stalked out of the room. He held up cash, mostly twenties.

"Three hundred dollars. What's this from?"

"Payday. I hid the money in my sock drawer," Jump answered.

"You didn't take it to the bank?" Gresh asked.

Jump turned and looked at him. "I'm not comfortable with banks yet."

"You can't leave your money lying around like that. We have a bunch of strangers staying at the cottages. You really need to deposit your paycheck."

"I know, but I feel like—"

"Hey, so you're saying this three hundred is from your paycheck, you didn't steal it?"

"Brody, give it a rest. We've been over the entire room. Jump didn't commit the crime, just like I was saying," Bruce said.

Brody spun around, his shoulders stiff. "I don't like this."

"You mean you don't like that I'm gay and dating Jump. That's what this is really about."

"You need to watch yourself, you are still a deputy." Brody tossed the money on the bed and stalked out of Jump's room, exiting the bunkhouse in a flurry of slammed doors.

The sky had pinked up while Brody had been looking through Jump's stuff, signaling the start of another long day. Gresh had hoped to sleep later this morning since they would be heading to Riley and Connor's place tonight.

"Jump, you okay?" Gresh asked.

"Yeah." Jump had his arms folded over his chest, like he was protecting himself from all the bad. Gresh pulled him into a hug, then noticed Bruce looking at Jump like he wanted to be the one holding him.

"Go to Bruce." Gresh let him go and pushed him towards his boyfriend. He smiled at the way they hesitated before melting together in a tight hug, their lips seeking each other's.
