“Okay, could someone please tell me what we’re doing here? Because I don’t get it, like, at all.”

“We’re shopping, Alecia. Just three girls out for a trip to the market. What could be more normal than that?”

“Um, that’s kind of my point? What the hell are we wasting our time shopping for when there are so many other things we could be doing? You know, important things. Things that actually fucking matter.”

“We’re doing exactly what matters, Alecia. We’re taking care of our families. It’s the most important thing in the world. It’s the opportunity we were all three so blessed to have.”

Alecia stopped walking, her mouth hanging open in disbelief. I could tell she was thoroughly disgusted with Becca for all of the things she was saying. If she was trying to hide it, which I highly doubted she was, she wasn't doing a good job. When she looked at me, her face was flushed with anger I was sure would only get worse as the seconds ticked by.

“Do you believe this shit? It's like the invasion of the goddamn body snatchers over here! Who the hell are you, and what have you done with my friend?”

“She is your friend,” I said calmly, looking at Becca levelly and giving her the slightest of all possible nods, “she's just enjoying her new life. We're very lucky, you know. To be here, to have such incredible warriors as our mates. It's certainly a gift from the gods.”

“Okay, what? I feel like I stepped into an episode of the Twilight Zone! I don’t get what’s going on with you two! It’s like someone came in and secretly lobotomized you both. Do Radon and Tevor know about this? Do they know the two of you turned into mindless Morigon drones?”

“Come on, Alecia,” I answered in a quiet voice, “I think the heat’s probably just getting to you. Why don’t we stop at that little cafe? We can grab a bite, maybe something to drink.”

“I wish I could have a drink. I could sure as shit use one. But, in case you forgot, I’m just a little bit pregnant right now. And Becca is kind of a lot bit pregnant, so drinking is out of the question for the both of us.”

“No, I didn't mean alcohol, Alecia. I didn't forget about your delicate conditions. I was thinking more along the lines of one of those fruit slushies they make, that and maybe a glass of water. I'm starting to feel a little bit weird, and I don't want to let myself get dehydrated again. If I faint again I swear, Tevor will never let me out of the house again. Not that he'd want to stay and look after me or anything, but he would make sure big brother Finnegan never left my sight.”

“Oh, shit,” Alecia answered quickly, color rising in her cheeks again, only this time out of embarrassment instead of anger, “right. My bad, I kind of forgot about that. I don't want you passing out, either.
