Chapter 20

Desiree was far sneakier than I gave her credit for. She tucked a thin shiv into the bound segment of her blonde ponytail, which had been fashioned from a piece of her vanity.

Camryn remained unarmed, but stayed within arm’s reach of Desiree’s hair. I got dressed quickly after shoveling what I could down my gullet.

The Derelicts were scattering into their various groups, and I saw the women rushing back to their rooms. Drae’el stood in the middle of the room, looking motionlessly toward the door.

Wondering what she saw, I went to the door control panel but kept it open to take a look outside.

“Jack, we’re safer in here. What are you doing?” asked Camryn, walking up to put her hand on my arm.

“Did you see the mirror? I think Drae’el sees something.”

“You’re not going out there, are you?” Desiree asked as she came to the door where I was standing.

“No. I’m going to poke my head out and—”

Gunfire.

The Pinnacle guards hadn’t left the Pens yet.

Which meant Dr. Harper was still out there, too.

“Shit,” I said. “Keep the shiv. Stay in here.”

Camryn’s expression hardened, and Desiree’s eyes dimmed like they’d become devoid of all emotion.

“Don’t make me come and get you,” Camryn said with a rigid stare.

“We’re watching from the door until you come back,” said Desiree.

I winked at the girls and took off toward the atrium as other inmates fled the scene. When I got there, I saw two dead Derelicts in the middle of the floor with shanks in their hands.

They weren’t from Art’s crew, but they’d been shot dead just outside the safe zone. Dr. Harper was inside it, between two guards who had their weapons raised.

From the looks of things, the pair of them tried to rush the doctor, and got put down by Pinnacle security. Dr. Harper, despite the two corpses lying in growing pool of their own blood, did not look distressed.

Quite the opposite, her eyes were focused and alert. She’d seen this sort of thing before. Made sense. To get assigned to a place like Pinnacle meant she had to have an edge to her, and I was seeing it clearly.

“Get back!” one of the guards shouted, pointing his weapon at me.

Dr. Harper raised her hand and stepped up to the guard’s flank, fanning her hand to get his attention.

“Lower your weapons,” Dr. Harper ordered.

Staring at the bodies had my subconscious screaming that I’d be next if I didn’t do something.

“I’m not a threat,” I said in a level tone, trying to get my hands up slowly.

“On the ground, now!”

“Don’t move!”

Their instructions were panicked and conflicting, and I didn’t know what to do.

“Put your weapons down!” Dr. Harper shouted.

They ignored her.

It was too much pandemonium, and the guards were twitchy. The alarms blared in my ears as my stomach turned at the sight of the newly dead, but I still noticed that the main door hadn’t opened.

They were caged in with the rest of us, and had itchy trigger fingers. I didn’t even have time to raise my hands.
