When you need to secure money, or switch funds to local currency, always use a bank or legitimate financial exchange or kiosk. Street vendors offering better exchange rates can be everything from local criminals setting you up for a robbery, or local law enforcement. Many countries prohibit changing currency outside of banks, and many travelers have been arrested for illegal street transactions!

145. What’s your credit limit? Unless you’re planning on paying for everything with cash, having a credit card or two with a sizable limit can help with unexpected expenses or emergencies. Do, however, know the credit limits on all credit cards in your possession. Some U.S. citizens have been arrested and detained for going over their credit limits. If you are going to use an ATM/debit card on foreign travels, make sure your hotel and merchants will accept it. Some countries do not allow the use of ATM/debit cards from U.S. banks.

146. U.S. dollars: Don’t carry large amounts of U.S. money with you in a foreign country. If you have American dollars, leave them in your in-room hotel safe or the hotel safe deposit box until you can exchange them for local currency. Pulling out a big wad of U.S. greenbacks in any nation and you’ve automatically identified yourself as a rich American.

147. Smoking: If you’ve yet to kick the habit, it’s wise to see about switching to a local brand of cigars and cigarettes. Domestic U.S. brands in foreign lands can easily identify you as a visitor.

148. Bad neighborhoods: Do not travel into areas where crime is high and police protection is low. Find out from the hotels and restaurants which streets and areas should be avoided. When traveling around a city, make mental notes of safe havens, such as police and fire stations, hospitals, embassies, and the like. Avoid local demonstrations, travel offices, government offices, and other high-visibility target areas.

149. Where did everyone go?: Watch for the conspicuous absence of locals from streets, lobbies, the airport, train station, bus terminal, and so on. It could be an advance warning of a terrorist attack, kidnapping, or bombing.
