Chapter 33

Now past 6pm, I was starving. The 24-Hour Fitness on Yale miraculously had no one at the front desk. It would be so easy to let my mind run away from me, thinking everything that happened now was part of the same orchestration of events that helped me escape from the temporary police precinct. I slipped into the gym through the main entrance, stopped along the way to grab a vending machine granola bar and headed to the locker rooms. Heart thudding, I tried to look like I belonged there. I didn’t. Wrong clothes, dripping granola crumbs on the floor as I walked, I hadn’t been inside a gym in over four months.

Three towel-waisted men in the pool area, two at the lockers to the left, I hit the last row of them searching for one numbered 500. It was not only unlocked but strategically positioned on the bottom row, providing even more cover for whatever was inside. I heard laughing in the next row of lockers, someone talking on the phone, loudly no less. Social faux pas. The worst part was that I didn’t have a backpack or bag of any kind to hide the contents. Act like you own the place, I kept reminding myself. I pulled open the locker door.

There was a plastic folder and, funny, a plastic gym bag folded behind it to carry it in. They’d thought of everything, hadn’t they? Did they also have a getaway car waiting outside? If they did, it probably wouldn’t be taking me where I wanted to go, which was to Anabel’s house. I needed the familiarity of the boathouse right now to access whatever memories I’d suppressed so many years ago. I decided reviewing the contents here was too dangerous. I thought of a restroom or shower stall but even that came with some risk. I slipped the folder into the backpack and hooked it over my shoulder, heading for the next location: Bainbridge Island.
