Chapter 6

When Emmeline woke up very early the next morning, she bounded out of bed and headed to the servants’ kitchen. She put on coffee, made herself a quick breakfast, then sat down at the table with her checklist. She needed to get a handle on some of these things, figure out all the phone calls that needed to be made, who among this special group she could put work on to, and what she needed to hire someone to take on.

But, at the same time, Emmeline needed to pass off a bunch of this money stuff to Celia to take over. That girl needed to stay off her feet as it was, and now they had a wedding to arrange. Emmeline frowned, as she thought about that. If she could give a lot of that wedding planning over to Charles, it would help. But he might not want to take that on. She couldn’t really blame him, since he was busy doing security stuff, which is something he excelled at, so asking him to take on a wedding was definitely not the easiest or the most natural shift.

For her, it would be fun. It’s just she had a time frame issue, but she’d promised to get it done, so she would. That’s just the way life was. As she continued to work on her list and nibbled away on her toast, others slowly came to join her. She looked up as each one walked in, smiled at them, and went back to her work.

Celia sat down beside her. “What are you working on?”

“Lots of different lists,” she said, taking a sip of coffee. “I’m basically doing a brain dump at this point, listing things that need to be done today, people I need to phone today, and things that we’ll add to our work list for the wedding to happen.”

“I kind of feel bad about that.” Celia winced. “You’re already dealing with so much.”

“So, I’m dealing with a little bit more,” she said cheerfully. “It’s really not an issue.”

“I do like that, thank you very much,” she murmured. “Your attitude is very refreshing.”

Emmeline just smiled at her. “You have a job right now, whether it’s what you ever thought you would be doing or not. Your job is to do your very best to bring those babies safely to term.”

“That point has been brought home to me a few times now.”

“I’m sure it has,” she said, with a smile, “and you can expect more of that as you get closer.”

She nodded. “So, have you got something for me to go work on?” Celia asked.

“I do. I figured that, after you’ve had your breakfast, you could head up to your room, where we’ll get you set up with a laptop. With your feet up,” she added. “Do you think I haven’t noticed that your ankles are starting to swell?”

She winced. “Maybe don’t pass around that detail,” Celia whispered.

“Too late,” Clary said, as she walked in. “I’ll do some energy work on you today and see if we can get that to stop.
