Sy woke to a knock on the door. He squinted through the slits of light streaming through the venetian blinds and raised his hand to shield his eyes. The noise from the other side of the door became more urgent and faster in tempo.
"Daddy? You in there? It's me, Sally."
"I'm coming!" He unlocked the door and eased it open, holding it from hitting the couch where Patty slept.
She stared at him, frustration apparent on her face. "How is Allen doing? You never called yesterday. Did you even have your phone with you?"
"Would you believe, I left it in the bedroom on the nightstand. Allen went out last night. I figured he'd be back by now."
Sy knew Sally wasn't the patient type, and he could tell she wasn't in a good mood. The strange car in the driveway probably wasn't helping either.
"Where's the nurse caring for him? Where have you been? And who's car is that?" She pointed to Patty's Toyota.
"Slow down. Come in, and I'll make coffee. Then I can tell you everything."
She exhaled an exasperated breath. "Okay. Let me tell Tom. He's waiting in the car. Says he has some errands to run. I'll stay here while he goes."
Sy watched her trot down the steps and over to the car. He could see the look of frustration in Tom's eyes, but he seemed to comply, and backed out of the driveway. As Sally walked past the Toyota, Sy saw her shake her head, then march toward the trailer.
"What's going on?" Patty said, rising from the couch. "I need some Ibuprofen. My head is splitting."
"My daughter Sally is here. You haven't met her yet, but I'll introduce you."
He turned toward her. His eyes widened, and his pulse rose. Patty was dressed in nothing but bra and panties. He looked away, clearly embarrassed.
"Your clothes?"
She reached for the blanket on the couch, covering herself the best she could.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot I was undressed."
"Apparently you did."
Sy turned to see his red- faced daughter in the doorway. "Now, Sally. This isn't what it looks like."
She looked at Patty then at Sy, breathing in deep and exhaling loudly. Patty reached past Sy for her clothing on the floor. She gave a small wave. Sy realized so many lines had been crossed he'd never be able to fix them.
"Hi, I'm Patty. Pleasure to meet you. I'll excuse myself to the bathroom now." She backed away and turned to the hallway, exposing her backside and thong panties.
Sally shook her head and stared at her dad, who was taking in the view. "Dad? Can I talk to you on the porch?"
Sy knew he looked as though he'd been caught with his hand in the cookie jar, so he followed.
"Dad? What are you doing? Why is that girl here? Is she the reason you won't answer your phone? How old is she?"
"Sally, I'm not doing anything with her. She's a coworker of Rhonda's. I was out looking for Allen and Rhonda last night, and she was helping me.
