Chapter Twenty-Two
Finally they were on their last mile of the bike ride, much to Brookeâs relief. Her ass hurt from the seat that felt like concrete, and her legs were as heavy as if theyâd cycled a bloody marathon. Who knew that cycling eight miles would be such a hardship. Perhaps joining a gym was called for. She could no longer use the excuse that she didnât have the time. In the seat ahead of her, Cam, as usual, seemed no worse for the wear, hardly even breaking a sweat for the last two-plus hours. The woman had a knack for landing on her feet, for grinding through the unbearable without scars. Lucky her.
âOh, look!â Brooke yelled. âTo the right! Itâs Arch Rock. Isnât that cool?â The big limestone arch loomed four stories high on the cliff above the water, a natural rock formation that almost resembled a giant donut. It played a feature role in all the pamphlets about the island.
âWhat? Where?â
Brooke hauled on her useless handlebars to turn the bike so that Cam could see the rock. The bike bucked and wobbled in response and began to tilt. âOh, crap!â
The tilt turned into a full-out topple. Both women tumbled to the ground, the bike landing on top of them. Cam was the first to get to her feet and pull the bike away.
âJesus, are you all right, Brooke?â
It took a minute for Brooke to notice her skinned, bleeding knee. Tiny pebbles adhered to the raw flesh. âI think so. Though my knee isnât looking so pretty.â
âLet me see.â Cam took her elbow and helped her up. âCan you move it okay?â
Brooke gingerly bent her knee. âYup, it seems okay. Stings though.â
Cam gently placed her fingers on either side of the abrasion, her touch cool and soothing. âWe need to clean this up. You donât want an infection getting in there.â
âYes, Doctor, but Iâm sure it will be fine.â Brooke smiled at Camâs concern. Concern that she didnât deserve since she was the one whoâd crashed the bike, but sheâd gladly take it. âHowâs the bike?â
Cam stood it up and gave it a quick once over. âIt seems to have fared better than you. Do you want to walk the last half a mile, or are you okay to ride?â
âI can ride.â I hope.
âHop on. Iâll do the pedaling.â
Like hell, Brooke thought. She did her best, but if there was such a thing as limping while pedaling, she had it down pat, leaving her little choice but to let Cam do the bulk of the work. Minutes later, they pulled up in front of the general store.
âHi, Cam! Hi, Brooke!â Maggie said. âWhat are you twoâoh.â She frowned at the sight of Brookeâs knee. âWhat happened?â
âWe, um, sort of crashed and burned,â Brooke said.
âYup, thatâs us,â Cam grumbled. âWe seem to be experts at crashing and burning.â
âWait.â Maggieâs grin nearly ate up her face. âAnd here you each told me you were on the island alone. Had a fight and needed some space before getting back together, huh? Ah, I can understand that.
