SIXTEEN

Aaron couldn’t breathe. His lungs were on fire. The oxygen that kept him alive was barely enough. His eyes burned. His skin felt like a thousand ants crawled just beneath the surface. The icy snow helped, but he still couldn’t move.

He would find her. Find her and wrap his hands around her neck. Shake her. Why, Joanna?

She wanted him to die. After all he’d done for her. He’d killed for her. He’d taken vengeance in his hands and done something right for once in his life. Killing Lincoln Barnes made him the hero he knew he could be, the hero he wanted to prove to Joanna he was.

And she had hurt him.

He rose to his knees and crawled two feet before collapsing in a fit of violent coughing.

He would freeze out here, twenty feet from freedom. He couldn’t think, he couldn’t feel anything but intense pain throughout his body and the piercing wound to his heart.

Joanna had left him.

While he was dying in the snow, she’d driven away with someone. A man. A man like that evil Bruce Lawson who had lied to sweet Rebecca about Aaron, filling her head with vicious untruths.

He didn’t know how long he lay in the snow. His right hand gripped his gun, but it was so cold he didn’t know if he could move his fingers. For the first time since Joanna had betrayed him, the powerful cold of the snow was more painful than the burn of the pepper spray.

He looked up, the snowmobile seemed so far away. The wind slapped him in the back, the swirling snow taunting him. Joanna didn’t appreciate your sacrifices. Look what you did for her! And she betrayed you.

Love, Tyler.

The Sheriff of Beaverhead County, Montana.

She wasn’t worthy of Aaron’s love and affection. She wasn’t worthy of anything. She had betrayed him for a cop.

You killed her friend, Wyatt.

He’d interfered. Why couldn’t he have just let them go? Why did he have to get involved? Aaron didn’t want to kill. All he wanted was Joanna. Was that too much to ask?

Maybe he should just lie down here and wait for night. He would die in the snow, freeze to death. He was nobody, a speck of dust in the universe. Who would miss him?

(You pathetic animal. Get up and find the traitor.)

He crawled two more feet.

She’d used him. Flirted with him. Teased him. Then she turned to a cop for affection.

He didn’t deserve that kind of treatment. She should be thanking him for all he had done for her. What had the cops ever done? They could have killed Lincoln Barnes for her, but they had a so-called code of ethics. They’d arrested Linc, but he didn’t suffer for what he’d done to the Suttons. He’d been in prison before, gotten out, and killed.

Aaron blinked. His eyes still burned, but he could see a little better. He slowly rose, stumbled, and knelt to catch his breath. He coughed, his nose burned, but he breathed easier.

Slowly, he crawled in the icy snow, over the tracks the snowmobile had made.
