Chapter 11

“Y’all know Margot and Cari changed their mind about coming with us tonight when they saw this veil,” Everly said at dinner. “Jodi, I know you’ll tell me the truth. I’m afraid to look, are people staring at me?”

Jodi looked around with a smile. “No. We’re in the French Quarter, no one cares.”

“Who are Margot and Cari?” Donna asked and caused Rene and Val to crack up.

“The wives of Lucas’s friends,” Everly said before she took a bite of her fish.

“Well, I’m glad they didn’t come, they’re snooty.” Donna grabbed another roll from the basket in the middle of the table. “Y’all better eat this bread with butter on it, or the booze will make you sick.”

Kara took a roll. “I thought these parties were done on the night before the wedding.”

“Everly doesn’t want to look like shit on her big day,” Riley explained and rolled her eyes.

“Where’re the gay bars?” Rene asked Val.

“At the other end of Bourbon Street,” Val said. “Rene, if you ask a couple of guys to perform gay porn, you’re probably gonna get slapped.”

Everly batted at her veil as she tried to take another bite of her dinner. “We still wanna see the bars.”

“We’re gonna see all the bars on Bourbon Street,” Rene promised.

“I don’t think we’re gonna stay out past midnight at the rate we’re going,” Jodi said to Val when they left the third bar on Rene’s tour. She watched their group charge toward a packed club with a roll-up door that was wide open. “Would you think I was a stick in the mud if I said I didn’t want to go in there?”

“No, I’m thankful. I thought it was you feeling me up on the dance floor in that last place. When I turned around, it was someone wearing a dog mask. They ran when I rapped them on the snout. Did they think I was gonna turn around and say, ‘Hot dog mask, do me’? What’re you drinking?”

“Ginger ale.” Jodi held out her cup to Val. “Want some?”

“Thank you.” Val took the cup and drank a couple of sips as throngs of people wove around them.

“It’s crowded for a weeknight, there must be some festival going on. Hey, what did Eva say to you before you got into the limo?”

Val’s eyes opened wide as she handed Jodi her drink. “That reminds me, I need to beat Everly. Eva knows about the pool house.”

“Yeah,” Jodi said slowly with a laugh. “She got me on that one too. I was going to warn you, but we didn’t have very much time alone today at the four-hour lunch party with Udalea.”

“It’s way too crowded in there,” Rene said as she walked out of the bar with the group following behind her. “Donna and I have presents for you two, though.” Rene held out what looked like two test tubes filled with red liquid. “I don’t wanna brag, but we got these shots for free because of Everly’s veil. Drink them, ladies.”

Jodi took one of the tubes and sniffed it.
