Chapter Four

“Ugh,” I groaned as I came back to the land of the living. I opened my eyes somewhat annoyed with the light that peeked in through the blinds of my window. My body ached deliciously, and I couldn’t help the smile that came unbidden to my face at the memory of Cole and my joining the night before. I closed my eyes again and reveled in the pleasant ache of my loins, and I knew that every time I pressed down on the bruise at my hip, I’d remember exactly what happened.

“You seem very smug right now.”

I opened my eyes again and smiled. “How do you know I’m smug right now? You can’t even see my face.” I turned around, noting the various aches of my body, until I was facing Cole. He looked even more gorgeous in the light of day, and I enjoyed the way his hair was sticking up in all different directions as if someone had been pulling on it for most of the night.

“Definitely looking really smug right now,” he said again with a small smile.

I giggled. “Well wouldn’t you be feeling smug if you had just had sex with the most gorgeous guy ever?”

“I think if I woke up feeling like you do right now with another guy in my bed, I’d be feeling less smug and more confused.”

I laughed aloud before smacking Cole on the shoulder. He leaned in and gave me a kiss so sweet that I didn’t even mind his morning breath. I knew I could really get used to this feeling and I closed my eyes determined to enjoy it. The sound of Cole’s cell phone ringing was definitely not what I had in mind. Cole sighed against my lips before giving me a rueful smile.

“Sorry, baby. Let me check and see who that is.”

I smiled and waved him off. We had all day since his mother’s nurse was at his house for the day to help out. I was constantly amazed by Cole’s determination, especially in regards to his mother and her illness. His devotion to her as a son was more than admirable—it was fucking sexy. I sighed and leaned back against the bed as I heard him answer the call in the living room.

“What?!”

His yell made me sit up quickly, and I winced at how tight my muscles were. His exclamation worried me, but I wasn’t sure if it was my place to go in and ask if he was okay. Though we had been together every day since our last talk, we hadn’t yet had the discussion about exclusivity or permanence, so I still wasn’t completely sure where we stood with things.

Cole burst back in the room, his expression panicked, and I jumped out of bed. “Is everything okay?”

His expression was wild as he grabbed his shirt and pants, hastily putting them on. “No, I have to go.”

I nodded, grabbing my own shirt and throwing it over my head. “Okay, sure. Should I call you later, or do you want to call me?”

Cole didn’t look at me as he rushed from the room.
