CHAPTER ELEVEN:

The Passage Down Below

The two looked to each other, sharing the same thought: neither knew how to work the device. Nevets messed around with it, trying to reply with a message, but he could not. Tempo gave it a try, tapping the night sky; it felt like thick syrup as it clung to his finger. The stars had scattered and returned back into the message. He, too, failed.

Grabbing Tempo’s hand, Nevets screamed into it, hoping that would create a message. “SORRY, THIS IS NOT THE PERSON YOU ARE REACHING?” But that did not work as well. “I don’t know what to do.”

“Let me try,” Tempo said. “Yes, I have the cherry pie,” he joked, speaking in a deep voice. He grinned, amused by his own joke, but that smile quickly switched. While he was holding it, he noticed his pinky was dipped into the night sky, and the stars on compact case had rearranged, formulating the message:

Yes, I have the cherry pie.

Both their eyes widened while they watched the message melt away and the stars reappear, scattered, behind the dreary clouds. “Did I just send a message?” Tempo asked.

“Yeah. How did you do that?”

Tempo looked at the compact case and remembered his pinky was on the sky’s surface. “I think you have to touch it and speak.” Just as he spoke those words, another ding sounded along with a message:

The joey pie was supposed to be blueberry, you idiot. Just meet up at the spot and don’t mess that up.

The two looked at each other with shifty eyes before Tempo said, “Should we respond to that?”

“No,” Nevets said. “Especially after seeing that.”

“So, we’re not going to tell them we found this?” Tempo asked.

“Nope, at least not today. Maybe when they calm down.”

“You’re right about that,” Tempo said as he closed the compact case. “Whoever that is, they are uppp-set,” Tempo thought before he grabbed hands with his genie. Nevets raised his free one to the decorative dome ceiling before being sucked out of the lamp.

Leaves burst into the air, pouring down on the tall-haired, shadow kid. Nevets’ apparition was thrown back into a hefty pile of leaves by his father, who had used a new craft that he was teaching to his son. Nevets could see Talen and Grandma El across the Shrubbery Room in a Squabble match. Tempo knew Nevets wanted to be in Talen’s shoes; he felt the same way.

“Now, that’s how ya perform the good ol’ Watts’ Wallop. What ya’re doing was not it . . . . Now I want ya to try it again,” Mr. Watts said, using the Levitation Craft on Nevets to get him out of the leaves.

“Ah, that really hurt . . . Are you ready to try it again for the four hundredth time?” Nevets asked.

“If your dad would let us. He’s using us like we’re a punching bag,” Tempo replied.

“Alright, let’s go,” Mr. Watts said before making his shadow come to life.

“Ferit!” Tempo said as Nevets pushed the air, making a gust of mauve wind shoot out of his palms.
