Chapter Seventeen
Before I could start down the trail again, Abel tugged my hand gently. I glanced back and smiled at the teasing, “come thither” expression on his face. I had no problem closing the distance between us. He stepped even closer, brushing my hair out of my face and tucking it behind my ear before resting his hand on the back of my neck.
Abel’s brilliant blue eyes held me captive. His other arm tightened around my waist, and my own arms instinctively went up and around him. He moved to kiss me on the forehead, but instead lowered and placed gentle kisses along my jawline, leading toward my mouth. I completely melted in his arms. Holy cow, this guy was good!
Before he could reach my lips, though, I felt the amulet warm against my neck. I gasped, my hand going to it instinctively. Was it working already? Just then, a man came into view on the trail below us.
“Abel,” I said warningly. He turned, keeping his arms around me. We watched as the man approached.
“Hi. How do you do?” His accent wasn’t strong—I honestly couldn’t even tell where he was from. He looked Middle Eastern with a little Eastern European thrown in. His eyes briefly took in Abel, then didn’t leave my face.
“Good. You?” I said cautiously, waiting to see what the guy wanted. I already knew from the amulet’s brief reaction that he wasn’t a casual visitor.
“My name is Omar,” he said. “As a guardian of knowledge, I know your task and am duty-bound to help you fulfill it.”
I tilted my head. “You’re a hound?”
He nodded. “Those of us who are still privy to information have been trying to find you for several hours. When you ended up on top of the fortress, being the most knowledgeable of the area, I was sent to get you.”
Abel’s arm tightened around me. “How do we know you’re not here to destroy her?”
Omar shrugged. “You don’t.”
My eyes dropped to where the flame should be in his chest. It wasn’t there. That didn’t surprise me, though. “The amulet’s not quite functioning yet,” I said. “You probably know that, though.”
He nodded. “If I were one of the evil ones, I wouldn’t be able to approach.”
I nodded. “That was the promise I received.”
“I have a car at the campground not far from here. I can take you to the international airport in Mumbai.”
Abel still hadn’t relaxed his grip on me, but he nodded. “Very well.”
I glanced at him, surprised he’d agreed so quickly. Rather than question him in front of our new guide, though, I decided to go along with it. Abel had good instincts—I was learning to trust them.
My hand went up and encircled the amulet. Please work soon. I could really use your help. It had been at least ten hours since Lord Kenan had given me the missing piece. That meant I had around four to five hours to go. It felt like an eternity.
We started down the path again, and Omar kept up a long string of conversation.
