CHAPTER 11

We fall back into a familiar rhythm in the days after that. Even now that Celia is gone, we spend as much time with each other as we can. Of course, O and I still don’t really talk. It’s easier that way. But the other guys and me have found a way to be together that we’re all comfortable with.

And spoiled, I’m getting absolutely spoiled.

Dean has been cooking most of my evening meals, and I’m eating like a Goddess. Best of all; it’s all yummy healthy stuff. I even thought my skin was starting to glow when I looked in the mirror yesterday. But tonight, it will be just Jonah and me, and I’m cooking myself.

As I’m staring at some ingredients, willing them to magically become the chicken Parmesan I had gotten the recipe for, the door opens and Jonah walks in with his workout clothes on. It’s wet from being sweaty and he looks tired. Too tired. There are dark circles beneath his eyes and his skin is pale. I can see the cheekbones of his otherwise gorgeous face protruding more than usual. This is his coping mechanism. He doesn’t talk or do whatever people do that are struggling. He works out. And being true to who Jonah really is, he overdoes it.

He downs half of a bottle of water in one gulp and then sits down on one of the barstools at the bar. Walking over to him, I let my hand glide over his back when I sit down next to him.

“Do you need to eat something?”

He looks at me from beneath the strands of his wet hair hanging over his forehead, while he’s still catching his breath. “I’ll make a shake in a minute.”

The tingly feeling inside my brain doesn’t believe him. He’s getting too skinny, unhealthy. I try not to think about the unfinished food that is currently on my counter. I must have a granola bar somewhere around here for him to have.

“I really think you should eat something. How long did you work out?”

He doesn’t meet my eyes, and now I’m sure that there’s something going on.

“I ran ten miles,” is all he says.

Holy mother of God. Not even in the Zombie apocalypse would I be able to run ten miles. Perhaps chasing Chris Hemsworth would be incentive enough to get me to try, but I would fail miserably. Jonah does this for fun, or at least he acts like he does this for fun. But perhaps he’s doing it for some other reason as well. His working out and not eating almost feels like a way for him to punish himself. I just don’t understand what for.

“That’s a long run,” I start. “Didn’t you run for an hour yesterday as well?”

He doesn’t answer me as he plays with the water bottle in his hand, spinning it around on the bar.

“Listen,” I tell him. “While I greatly appreciate the art that is your body and I’m all for being healthy and working out.
