7 DISCUSSION DYNAMICS

More Hints

Five older adults were meeting to listen to stories. None of them had any biblical background or showed any interest in Christianity at all. They simply enjoyed hearing the stories while hoping to avoid the God of the stories. During the first three weeks, the minute the story ended they started talking about the latest gossip. No matter what question I asked to get discussion started, it didn’t work.

Some individuals and groups will test all your skills. You will discover that facilitating discussion is an art form, not following a recipe. On one end of the spectrum you’ll find people who refuse discussion altogether. At the other end you’ll find people who engage in discussion at a high level, asking “why” and “how” kinds of questions. And, of course, in between is everyone else. We need the Holy Spirit’s discernment and the wisdom that comes from making many mistakes to know how best to interact with people, wherever they are on the spectrum. And sometimes he will direct us not to do any discussion at all.
