Designing fault-tolerant Systems

One of the key aspects of a disaster planning strategy is the implementation of measures to decrease the possibility that the system might experience a failure. Systems should be designed to be fault-tolerant, making it necessary to rebuild and restore only in rare scenarios. In the event of a failure, fault-tolerant systems can also continue to function with degraded capacity, or standby systems can be activated promptly. The ability to recover from a failure can be strengthened through a variety of means, most of which are related to replication of services and equipment. With enough redundancy, the possibility of an interruption in service becomes almost nonexistent. But should a failure occur, the organization needs to be able to bring its systems back online as quickly as possible. A range of approaches are available in the cloud-computing sphere to achieve increasing levels of survivability despite failures, each with its associated costs.
