Chapter Eight

Penelope

The scene at the hospital is something I won’t soon forget. In the waiting room is my boss, the only woman to love my sister despite her flaws. Her elbows are propped on her knees, head resting in her hands. Her usual air of authority that she wears so well is gone, instead she looks defeated and fragile, like a lost puppy trying to be strong. I’ve seen it before on Sasha when she was fighting her own demons.

As I approach, she glances up and instantly stands, pulling me into a hug. I’m trying my best to keep it together, but I’m crumbling from the uncertainty and sobs leaving Kacey. I hold her until she starts to settle down, then she pulls back slightly, allowing me to get a good glimpse of her face. That’s when I notice her black eye and obviously broken nose.

“I should’ve done more, but we’d just argued and I was mad. When I went outside, she was already fighting. I ran over, but two teammates from the other side joined in before ours could. By the time I reached her, she was bloody and unconscious. A few of us got banged up and it’s all my fault. I didn’t make her listen to me and now she’s hurt. I knew she was pissed and just walked away. I don’t deserve her!” Sasha has problems, yes, but she’s an adult and in charge of her own decisions. Kacey needs to understand this isn’t on her.

“Sasha has a beautiful soul, but she’s not perfect. All you can do is be there for her and love her. She makes her own choices. This isn’t the first time she’s gotten hurt, and I doubt it’ll be the last. Why don’t you go home, ice your injuries, and I’ll be in touch?” Kacey gives me a deadly glare, making me regret my words.

“Don’t you dare send me away. She’s the other half of my soul. I’ll be whatever she needs, and if that means taking full responsibility for her then I will, even if she pushes me away for the rest of my life. No one will stand in my way, not even you, and I’m not leaving until I see her.”

A smile forms on my lips. “Thanks for loving her. I know she’s not easy, but there’s a wonderful woman in there.”

“I know, and all I want to do is spend every day with her, but she won’t let me.”

“I know, believe me, I know.” We take turns grabbing coffee from the cafeteria as we wait for hours, though it’s the plain stuff and I hate it. After once such trip, I return to see Kacey talking with a doctor, the first I’ve seen him since arriving.

“What the hell do you mean you can’t? I’m done with this privacy law crap. What the hell is going on with Sasha?”

Running over before this goes further and becomes a disaster -- I’ve seen Kacey in action and she is relentless – the doctor seems relieved to see me.
