Chapter 14

Kat

I had a wonderful weekend with Brad. I ate enough junk food to last a lifetime and drank several chocolate martinis until the room started to spin. I also slept in Brad and Joe’s bed, where Brad held me all night, which is what I needed. I was desperate for comfort from someone other than Max.

I dropped the dog off with Brick and was thrilled when he told me I could keep him in Boston because he was busy. I needed the companionship. I picked Max up when I left on Sunday.

Once James, had an independent valuation of the O3 done, I found it worth over one billion dollars. He fought with the attorneys about a buyout over half that figure. I deserved it. I worked hard and built the company up.

There were times I would spend eighteen hours a day writing code and improving graphics besides handling other functions of the business. This was especially true when Sophie had one of her breakdowns following Sydney’s death. She had Avery to deal with, and the girl had not handled her father’s death well. It was, in my opinion, that Sophie forgot about those times.

Once the valuation was done, that’s where the real battle started. Another company valued the business at eight-hundred million, which is why I was offered four-hundred million. It became ugly, and Sophie called me several times to rip me to shreds, screaming about how greedy I was.

All this was doing was making me crazy. Everything suffered, including poor Max. Several times I let him out in the backyard and forgot about him until hours later. My house was a mess, and I ended up going commando because I had no clean panties. It didn’t matter because who would notice?

My clothing was getting looser on me because I barely ate. Each time I got a call from James, it would send my stomach into a spin, and I would end up vomiting. The worst part was that the only support I had was Brad, and he was in his nightmare. Their surrogate became pregnant on the first try, and that gave Brad tremendous anxiety about what kind of father he would be, which caused arguments with Joe, which made it worse.

I couldn’t go to him with my turmoil when he had his own. And Anthony was no help. My older brother was still like a leaf in the wind. He was working at some marijuana dispensary in California now. This was job number eight-hundred or so. Of course, the last time I talked to him, he asked for a handout. Telling him to get a better job was on the tip of my tongue, but I sent him a check like a dutiful sister.

My mother was now living at a retirement community in Florida. I didn’t want to bother her with my misery, either. She finally seemed happy since my father died. I decided it was better to hold it in and keep it to myself.

Each week I went to my sociology class and avoided eye contact with Gavin.
