“What do you think of fishing, kid?” Miller asks, standing next to Ryder in a set of waders while he reels his lure back in slowly. Ryder is doing the same thing, regularly checking in with me or my brothers to make sure whatever he's doing is correct. He's caught two small salmon already. So he's feeling like a bit of a champ. I love seeing him so relaxed and happy.

“It's great,” he says, smiling. “Bobby Gunderson, from my old school, hates fishing. He says that his dad takes him and his brothers out to the middle of a lake and they just sit on either side of the boat with their poles sticking in the water. Half the time they don't even catch anything. And their dad won't even let them talk because he says it will scare away the fish. But this”—he tugs on his line as it catches yet again—“is awesome! I think I've got another one!”

I've just finished reeling one in, and I'm quick to drop it in the bucket with the others when Ryder’s pole almost bends over double. “You’ve hooked a big one this time,” I say, rushing over to help him.

It takes both of us working together to pull it in, and by the time we get it out of the water, Ryder seems to have grown an extra foot due to his pride. The salmon is almost half the size he is. I help him hold it up while Micah snaps a photo on my phone.

“You have to send that to my mom so she can see it,” Ryder says, the grin on his face so wide it practically engulfs his entire face.

“Do you wanna know what’s great about fishing with the boys, Ryder?” Miller asks as he sets his pole on the ground with ours. Ryder nods, obviously wanting to experience anything on offer at the moment. “No girls. No bullies.”

Ryder frowns for a moment, then nods. “I don’t mind the girls,” he says. “Don’t like the bullies, though.”

“Heard you got into it with one at school,” I say, starting to pack up the rods since we have enough salmon to feed the homestead tonight as well as some extra we can put in the smoker.

“Yeah.” Ryder kicks at the ground, and Micah and Tate start loading the back of the truck. “John said something I didn’t like, so I hit him in the face for it.”

“You know violence is never OK, right? You might want to do it at the time, but it’s never the answer.”

“Especially if you’re the one throwing the first punch,” Miller adds, actually being helpful with his advice.

Ryder looks up at me, and his eyes flash. “Sometimes you have to give bullies the ole one-two. Isn’t that what you did to protect Huxley?” he says, and suddenly understanding dawns on me. He took what Miller said in the park that day to heart. Shit.

“Yeah. But that was a different time. Kids weren’t taught how to sit down and talk about why we’re having problems the way we talk about things now.
