Chapter 19

(Ryker)

August 31, 2017

August passed through with few problems. Jason, Noel, and I got shit done and we earned plenty of money in photo shoots and ads of course. Having a kickass website and social network helped too, not to mention Jason’s side polo gig.

I called Jason as soon as I woke up and invited him over to the condo. Being in Tribal’s helped my image, and to return the favor to Jason, I had to go one step beyond. He arrived around noon. “Nice website you got, Jace,” I said, pouring a glass of orange juice for myself and a glass of chocolate milk for Jason. I never had the junk milk in my fridge before meeting the runt, and his metabolism must have been one of cosmic proportions. To be honest, I was jealous. He could eat three chocolate cakes in one day and not gain a pound.

We talked over the table, sipping our drinks. With him comfy, it was time to shoot the shit. “Dude, your birthday’s at the end of next month, right?”

Jason nodded eagerly. “Oh, you remembered.”

“Cool, since I had a little trip planned.”

“Oh, really? Where at?”

“Hold on a sec.” I got up and opened my blinds. My condo had the perfect view of Coronado Island just off to the right and San Diego Bay. If it weren’t for the Navy bases on the strand, it would have been a paradise to see every time I woke up. “Hey look outside, dude. What’ch you see?”

Jason walked up to the panoramic window, disinterested in the view. “The ocean.”

“Not just the ocean, Jace. The beach, and I figured for your birthday, we’d go up the coast for a little camping trip. Just you and me, no Noels allowed.”

“But isn’t that expensive? I’ve never gone camping, and If we do, how am I going to pay off my debt?”

“Wait a minute.” Jason never mentioned a debt to me before. We had been dating since June, and the thought never crossed his mind? “Start over.”

“Uh, my cousin Tyler’s been helping me,”

Who the hell was Tyler? If he didn’t say he was his cousin, then I’d say he’d been cheating on me. It wasn’t my business. “How’s he been helping you, dude?”

Jason told me the whole story. From what I got, his cousin’s been cashing him money every month so he doesn’t starve, and since I joined TCS, Tyler’s turned into a real asshole, and today was Jason’s day of reckoning. “We have enough to meet his demands, Ryk. I’m going to set my phone down and use your restroom. If he calls, answer it.”

“Uh, sure.” I said as Jason set his phone on the counter and went into my bathroom.

A minute later, the cell phone buzzed and I answered it. “Jace’s phone.”

“Who the fuck is this?” said a voice who needed a serious shower. If that was Jason’s cousin, he already met my expectations of the asshole Jason told me about.

“He’s busy, dude. You got a message?”

“Hell, yeah I do.
