CHAPTER FOURTEEN

HUNTLEY

Man, the motorboat went a lot faster than the gondola I was used to. I honestly thought I was going to fall off the back if I didn’t hold on, like all those sketchy fairground rides when I was a kid. I was surprised there weren’t more accidents at fairgrounds because of those.

We passed by Charon, who waved at us even though I was pretty sure we weren’t supposed to be driving with anything so fast. I tried to wave back but was too afraid to let go. What would happen if I fell out? Would I fall into the water to be floating for decades? Or would I miss the water and fall down into nothingness? I didn’t want to find out the answer to that the hard way.

But I had to admit, this was a nicer way to travel in the underworld. Everything, other than Hermes, was so much slower. I guess in death, there really was no need to hurry.

The gate to Earth was coming up, and I shut my eyes as I swore we were going to run right into it. Suddenly we stopped, and I held on with all my might, and after a few seconds opened my eyes. Maka was smiling at me.

“Really, Huntley? Did my driving frighten you that much?”

I didn’t say a word as we got out of the boat and walked through the portal. I had to admit, going through the gate was a lot nicer than straight through Oceanus as we had when Chrys, AJ, and I snuck out that one time. Apparently that was not the standard way to get out. That definitely made sense.

“So, is he still in Hong Kong?” I asked as we started off. It was clear we were somewhere that used Chinese symbols, but other than that, I had no idea. It wasn’t like I had come here often.

“Yes. He still has that opium den. It’s fascinating he hasn’t been caught, or perhaps he paid all the cops off. Usually he moved around, but he’s stayed in this location for quite some time.”

I nodded. “Right.”

Maka glanced at me. “Are you all right?”

I shrugged. “No? I mean, my wife was lying to me, and while I understand that, I still don’t feel good about it. I want to support her, but she isn’t giving me much to work with. Then to top it off, she goes to Aether, who is like some drug lord. Is she okay? Am I going to be able to help her? I mean, last time I was there, I had the will to get out of there because I had to go save her, but now…” I shook my head. “I don’t know if I would be able to leave.”

“Ah. There’s no shame in admitting that, Huntley. Plenty of gods have the same problem. Having that moment of relief is intoxicating, and when that is the only way to feel good, it becomes addicting. But you will have me there, so don’t worry.
