“Peachy.” Emily winked.

“Baby, you have no idea how much I want that to be true, but I’m not sure I believe you. Is your arm bothering you?”

Emily shifted the pack on her shoulders, and now there was no humor or sarcasm in her voice. “My arm is fine. It was just a bad scrape, and it isn’t hurting. Even if it was, I’m not sure I would notice. It’s beautiful here. The weather is perfect. In this moment, I have no complaints. Although I do have some concerns about the rest of the hike and how the night will go, but I’m fine.”

“But?”

“I just can’t get my brain to turn off. I don’t understand what’s going on. Who is the real target? What is the motivation? I keep analyzing and rejecting each hypothesis because nothing makes any sense. And I can’t bounce my theories off you because I don’t think this is a conversation we need to have in front of Mason, and you probably wouldn’t be willing to have this conversation with me anyway. So I’m stewing in my own conspiracy juices.”

“Wow. That’s a lot to unpack there.”

Emily grinned at him. “Go on.” She gave him a small shove, but he didn’t move his feet.

“You go ahead of me. I’ll take the rear.”

She narrowed her eyes at him but complied without any fuss. Once she was a few feet ahead of him, he fell in step behind her. Mason wasn’t so far ahead that they couldn’t see him, but he was out of earshot if they kept their voices low. “First, I’m thrilled that you aren’t miserable. I’ve been worried for the past hour that you were back here thinking murderous thoughts toward me and everyone responsible for you being here today.”

Her only response was a shake of her head that told him she thought he was an idiot. He could work with that.

“Second, the night will be fine. I think you might enjoy it once you get over having to pee in the woods.”

“Not likely to get over that part, Harper.”

He couldn’t stop himself from laughing, and when she looked over her shoulder at him, he was relieved to catch a glimpse of her gorgeous smile.

“Third—”

“There’s more?” This time her body shook with laughter, but she kept walking.

“I told you there was a lot to unpack.”

“Carry on.”

“Third is that I’m wondering if you can read my mind, because our thoughts are traveling the same trail.”

“I’m not surprised. Mason is probably having similar thoughts.”

“Probably. And so, fourth, you’re right. This isn’t a conversation we can have with Mason, beyond listening if he wants to talk.”

“Agreed.”

“But why would you think I wouldn’t want to talk to you about this?”

She moved to the side of the trail and turned to him. “I assumed it would be a violation of confidentiality to discuss it with me.”

“I won’t share any confidential information with you, but that doesn’t mean we can’t talk about what happened and brainstorm possibilities. Who knows? We might solve it before we get home.
