âPeachy.â Emily winked.
âBaby, you have no idea how much I want that to be true, but Iâm not sure I believe you. Is your arm bothering you?â
Emily shifted the pack on her shoulders, and now there was no humor or sarcasm in her voice. âMy arm is fine. It was just a bad scrape, and it isnât hurting. Even if it was, Iâm not sure I would notice. Itâs beautiful here. The weather is perfect. In this moment, I have no complaints. Although I do have some concerns about the rest of the hike and how the night will go, but Iâm fine.â
âBut?â
âI just canât get my brain to turn off. I donât understand whatâs going on. Who is the real target? What is the motivation? I keep analyzing and rejecting each hypothesis because nothing makes any sense. And I canât bounce my theories off you because I donât think this is a conversation we need to have in front of Mason, and you probably wouldnât be willing to have this conversation with me anyway. So Iâm stewing in my own conspiracy juices.â
âWow. Thatâs a lot to unpack there.â
Emily grinned at him. âGo on.â She gave him a small shove, but he didnât move his feet.
âYou go ahead of me. Iâll take the rear.â
She narrowed her eyes at him but complied without any fuss. Once she was a few feet ahead of him, he fell in step behind her. Mason wasnât so far ahead that they couldnât see him, but he was out of earshot if they kept their voices low. âFirst, Iâm thrilled that you arenât miserable. Iâve been worried for the past hour that you were back here thinking murderous thoughts toward me and everyone responsible for you being here today.â
Her only response was a shake of her head that told him she thought he was an idiot. He could work with that.
âSecond, the night will be fine. I think you might enjoy it once you get over having to pee in the woods.â
âNot likely to get over that part, Harper.â
He couldnât stop himself from laughing, and when she looked over her shoulder at him, he was relieved to catch a glimpse of her gorgeous smile.
âThirdââ
âThereâs more?â This time her body shook with laughter, but she kept walking.
âI told you there was a lot to unpack.â
âCarry on.â
âThird is that Iâm wondering if you can read my mind, because our thoughts are traveling the same trail.â
âIâm not surprised. Mason is probably having similar thoughts.â
âProbably. And so, fourth, youâre right. This isnât a conversation we can have with Mason, beyond listening if he wants to talk.â
âAgreed.â
âBut why would you think I wouldnât want to talk to you about this?â
She moved to the side of the trail and turned to him. âI assumed it would be a violation of confidentiality to discuss it with me.â
âI wonât share any confidential information with you, but that doesnât mean we canât talk about what happened and brainstorm possibilities. Who knows? We might solve it before we get home.
