I park the Charger in the lot of a McDonald’s restaurant. The golden arches gleam in the dusk. Crockett, Stroud and Heth go inside for food. A low guardrail separates the lot from a ditch. I sit on the rail, call Stein.

“We’ve got Stroud,” I tell her.

“Where is he?”

“In a McDonald’s with Crockett. Scarfing his dinner.”

“Any sign of Kang?”

“He took a run at us. Won’t be seeing him again.”

“My money was on you.”

“I can’t take credit. Stroud founded a motorcycle club. Great colors—a vampire bat. Stroud still dreams about the tunnels in Yunnan. While Kang was conscious, the Fangs broke every bone in his body. Several times over.”

“Oh.” I imagine Stein taking notes with her Montblanc. She stops, processes the image, carries on. “We still don’t have a line on Appleyard. He killed Fairchild, and I am in a safe place. All remaining Company targets are under guard. The field has begun to tilt in our favor.”

“Love it when that happens. Are you able to tell us more about the Yunnan installation?”

“Yes. I need you to bring Crockett and Stroud to Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado Springs.”

“Why?”

“I want to see you.”
