Now What?

You’re about to dive into understanding the three modalities with super-specificity. So what can you do with this information? Here’s the thing… Almost3 anyone you work with has all three of these modalities at their disposal at any moment. They are snapping into visual, auditory and kinesthetic no matter what their diagnostics say all the time every day. So…

•Start noticing, listening for and catching on to people’s preferences.

•Enter the modality of the person you’re working with 1:1, and everything shifts. You’ll have their attention, their rapport, and their partnership.

•Incorporate all three modalities into your delivery, and instantly you’re speaking everyone’s language instead of just relating to those with the same preference as you.

Debate Alert!

There’s a lot of critique on the “validity” of VAK as learning styles, so let’s clear this up now. Some academics have attempted to officially debunk it as an irrelevant theory based on some clinical trials they’ve run. Yet their tests have been limited in some important ways, their conclusions inaccurate and in gross conflict with my observations of hundreds of thousands of learners and educators over several decades. They tested the idea of whether teaching someone through their preferred modality makes it easier for them to learn something or not. Except they didn’t use neutral content in the studies. Their tests show things like teaching a geography lesson to an auditory learner only through auditory means (strictly talking them through it, not showing it to them), which didn’t work. Of course it didn’t, because despite someone’s modality preference Geography is visual content; so for anyone to learn it they have to see the countries on the map in spatial relation to one another!

My conclusions and recommendations are based on a myriad of content, taught through all three modalities, to see if any are easier than the others for learners. I’ve watched understanding and learning become easy for so many people when it had been such a struggle before- with just a modality change. I’ve studied how people best create ideas in the first place (ie: left to their own preferences, which way do they go?), and modality matters critically there. Since we have yet to see neutral clinical studies, let’s go with my 10,000+ hours of observation and coaching in this arena.
