MAMARI. A migratory canoe commanded by the ancestor Nukutawhiti. It was wrecked on its arrival. The descendants of its crew settled in the far north of Te Ika a Māui.

MAN. TÅ«-matauenga was the god of mankind. Having decided that men rather than gods should inhabit the earth, TÅ«-matauenga produced the ira tangata by forming man in his likeness and giving him life. The first man created was Tiki and he became the father of the human race.

In one legend he mates with Hine-ahu-one, the earth-formed woman created by Tāne, but this tradition was not normally taught. The name of Tiki’s first wife has been lost.

TÅ«-matauenga, being the god of war as well as of man, was the guardian of mankind and especially of men, thus representing the male element that is symbolised in Tiki.

Gods (wars of), Hine-ahu-one, ira tangata, Tiki, TÅ«-matauenga.
