The Mk VIC was armed with a BESA 15mm heavy machine gun with a distinctive long barrel and a coaxial 7.92mm BESA. This variant also dispensed with the turret cupola, instead employing two domed hatches to give access.

British Mk IVBs abandoned in France during the retreat of the BEF in 1940. On the road the VIB could manage a respectable 35mph or 25mph cross country, but its armour was just 14mm at its thickest.

The A12 Matilda II infantry tank entered service in 1939 and was first employed by 7RTR during the retreat to Dunkirk.
