“Do you mind if I end up naked for a while?” I ask, “Oh, and we need to step outside.”

“What?” she asks. She’s not smiling. She’s losing patience. “Stay on topic. I don’t… I want you to tell me the truth. I don’t understand why you’re being so… Fuck, I don’t know. Why are you being so cagey?”

“I am staying on topic,” I say, “but I’m not going to tell you the truth. I’m going to show you the truth. I’ll show you what I had to change and why the cats left.”

Her eyes narrow. “I don’t expect you to suddenly treat me like we’re married,” she says, “but I don’t think that means you can treat me like a child.”

I smile gently and say, “If you would trust me for the next thirty seconds or so, I’ll show you I’m not playing a game. I’m about to show you something most people never get to see and…” I shake my head a little vehemently. “Look, Candace. I need you to just trust me. Any more talking about it is going to make you angrier. The only way you’ll know I’m not screwing around is if we go outside.”

She glares at me and says, “Fine but this isn’t fucking funny.”

I walk out and kick off my shoes. I already lost one pair in the last twenty-four hours and I could do without losing another. “What the hell?” she asks.

“Stay on the porch,” I say and then walk about ten yards out. I turn around and say, “You’re right that they weren’t normal cougars but you’re wrong about them being a new subspecies.”

She shakes her head. “What’s going on? Why did you take off your shoes?”

“So, what’s about to happen to my other clothes doesn’t happen to them.” I see her reaction. She’s ready to explode. I say, “Candace, it will still be me.”

“What the fuck does that even mean?” she asks. She’s definitely ready to explode.

“It will still be me and I will still know you,” I reply.

“What the fuck is…” She doesn’t finish because the man to whom she spoke is gone and in his place is the largest lion, African lion, she’s ever seen. I keep my eyes on her and watch as her eyes register shock and then interest I imagine is very similar to the interest she shows when she encounters a new scientific mystery she naturally feels a need to investigate.

And then, the shock returns.

And then she whispers, “Are you… Dominic? Is that you?”

I nod my head in response, my eyes never leaving her face. I can see the disbelief and shock etched on her features, but there is also a glimmer of something else there, something that I can't quite put my finger on. Candace takes a cautious step forward, her eyes wide open as she takes in my new form.

I can feel the heat of the sun on my fur, the roughness of the ground beneath my paws. It's a sensation unlike anything else, and for a moment, I'm lost in the sheer joy of it all.
