Allax Drake
Allax terminated the call, turning a swift half-circle before pressing onward with his eyes fixed down the length of his rifle. The panic of knowing Eve was in danger had obliterated any trace of Robâs rogue armor from his thoughts. His relief expressed itself as an awkward smile. Not knowing the repercussions had saved him from a brutal crossroads, where Maika and Eve stood on opposite ends. He was thankful, though deep down he knew a choice was hidden in the way he so readily abandoned the consideration of consequences.
Attuned to any source of danger, Allax observed his surroundings like a bird of prey, eyes darting around, scanning the environment for something that shouldnât be. Disarray was evident everywhere, but whether that was the telltale signature of a synthetic presence, or the chaos EmÃl often left in his wake, was impossible to tell.
âI could go a hell of a lot faster if I had more information to work with, doc,â Allax said. âDo you have cameras online?â
âIf we can see Eve, so can Talos. Right now, it is imperative that the cameras stay offline until you find Eve.â
Allax bit his tongue so as to not let anger slip. âI wouldnât have to go find her in the place if you hadnât told her to leave on her own. What the hell were you thinking?â
âWe are in a situation in which any wasted second can make the difference,â EmÃl said, raising his voice gradually. âI know exactly how dangerous Talos could be outside these walls. You know why I created the Network, donât you? It wasnât to mend the world; to give quality of life to the Coalition, like a semblance of what things were like pre-war. No. The Network only exists to give Director McGarrett absolute power. Allow him to spy on people. Access every system. And no one but him has the key. Talos does not abide by those rules. They are born from the Network. It is their world. If we do not stop them while they are weak, we will never stop them. So I had to make the hard call. I am the only one that can limit Talosâs access. I cannot leave the control room. And besides me, only Evelynn has the necessary knowledge to shut fabrication down. In an ideal world, you would have escorted her, like I asked you to, and made sure the job got done safely.â
âSacrificing Eve should never have been on the table.â
âAnd thatâs why we couldnât give you a choice.â
Allaxâs blood boiled, and the only way to temper the fire was to keep his goal centered. Perhaps just in time, as a zap through his spine snapped him into focus. His skin tightened, tingles pulsing throughout his body like a low current. Thatâs not Eve.
He glanced over his shoulder, fully expecting a presence to appear. Instead, the empty hallway greeted him. âI know youâre here. Why donât you show yourself, and weâll talk? We donât have to fight.
