Chapter 8

"We're trying to get that new guy, Jonathan, to join the basketball team," Todd told Elizabeth as they walked hand in hand along the beach later that afternoon. Cool sea foam lapped over their bare feet, and seagulls circled overhead, their cries carried by the wind. The sun was just beginning to set, sending streaks of pink and pale orange across the sky and water.

Elizabeth gazed out over the horizon, frowning. She'd suggested driving to the beach after school in the hope that the setting would inspire romantic feelings for Todd in her. But so far it hadn't worked. His constant harping about the "magnificent" Jonathan Cain wasn't helping either.

Todd let go of her hand and bent down to pick up a pebble. "I saw him yesterday in the gym, shooting baskets. He's something else."

Elizabeth groaned to herself and tried to change the subject. "I turned in my column about Maria today and decided to do a follow-up article about child actors. Some of the stories she told me were fascinating."

"Jonathan didn't miss one shot, even from clear across the gym. I've never seen anything like it," Todd declared, flinging the rock into the ocean.

Elizabeth clenched her jaw and exhaled loudly. "That's so nice, Todd," she replied sarcastically.

He grabbed her hand and gave her a sheepish look. "There I go again, rambling on and on about basketball."

"It's OK, really," Elizabeth said with a sigh. "I should be used to it by now—love you, love your sport."

Todd chuckled and hugged her to his side. "You're more important to me than basketball, Liz. Didn't I prove it to you when I drove all the way up to Montana just to spend the weekend with you at Camp Echo Mountain?"

Elizabeth nodded, suddenly contrite. I'm not being fair to Todd, she realized. He had been making an effort, while she had concentrated on finding fault with him. That's all going to change right now, she vowed. Pushing everything else out of her mind except Todd, she wrapped her arms around his neck and pressed her lips to his for a deep, lingering kiss.

"I'll take a bottle of Midnight Song nail polish," Enid said as she handed the color chart back to the manicurist. The petite woman nodded curtly as she arranged various bottles, tubes, and jars on the small table between them.

Enid's visit to the salon was turning out to be a fabulous adventure. She had decided to treat herself to a whole beauty makeover instead of just a new hairstyle.

A solid line of mirrors ran the entire length of the salon, making the space seem infinitely wide and bright. Enid glanced at her reflection and grinned, pleased at what she saw. The girl looking back at her was nothing like the old Enid. My entire life is about to change, so why shouldn't my looks? she reasoned. Jonathan is worth it.

Her formerly curly reddish brown hair had been chemically straightened and dyed black. Enid turned her head slightly, loving the way it cascaded down her back.
